In late August, Wendy Burgower attended the Texas Academy of Family Law Specialists (TAFLS) banquet, not knowing what was about to happen. In attendance, her family, colleagues and friends knew "it" was coming.
At the podium Diana Friedman, last year's Sam Emison award recipient, began sharing comments from several other past award winners.
"Judge Rucker said, 'Like Sam Emison for whom this award is named, Emison Award recipients are persons whose careers serve as models of excellence by doing ordinary things extraordinarily well. My children call the Emison Award the Heisman Trophy of Family Law."
Friedman continued reading comments given to her by Tom Ausley and Chief Justice Ann McClure. Then, Friedman began giving hints of 2017's winner of the Sam Emison Award.
"This year’s recipient has made it a point to mentor many younger lawyers and works to make the profession of being a family law lawyer better," said Friedman. "For this year’s recipient, practicing family law is not just about making money, but doing the right thing. One of her client’s commented, 'if you can make it through her consultation, there’s nothing opposing counsel can do to you.'"
Wendy Burgower's name was called, and approached the podium totally surprised. The Sam Emison Award is one of the most prestigious honors a Texas family lawyer or judge can receive and is earned in recognition of a significant impact on the practice of family law and the family law bar association.
“I think receiving the Sam Emison Award is not just an honor, but a challenge," said Burgower. "I need to be worthy of the award every day, and be deserving of it in every case. I look at the previous recipients and find them to be inspiring. I hope that I can inspire others in my path as well."
